During the second half of the semester we complete a project that uses all the skills you have gained, as well as enhances those skills when required.

This final assessment item takes the content you have learned in the various clusters and allows you to present a project that combines all the knowledge you have gained in a real life situation. This form of summative assessment allows you to demonstrate the ability to bring various concepts together to develop solutions that encompass the various areas of skill and knowledge.

To complete this summative assessment you will need to select a project from the list below, or write a project proposal that outlines the details of the proposed project. The project proposal needs to have a sponsor, that is someone you are developing the project for that is not yourself.

All projects must be accessible, usable with and without Javascript enabled and follow guidelines and requirements set by the business, state or national requirements for web sites as needed.

For those who are completing a smaller selection of units we will determine suitable alternatives for you to develop. These alternatives, when determined, will be added to the list below.

Suggested projects

Each project listed below has a rough outline of features that are available on request. When you are selecting a project you should be ready to determine the goals that you will reach when implementing the final solution. The same applies to projects that are proposed by you for third parties not listed.

Projects that are currently proposed are:

  1. Web Site Block/Unblock System
  2. Bulk Mail & Advertising System
  3. Equipment Booking and Availability System
  4. Timetable Development System
  5. Student Attendance System
  6. Web Server Management System for XAMPP
  7. Online Opinion Poll System [OOPS]
  8. Professional Development Tracking System
  9. Song Contest Voting System
  10. AFL tipping System
  11. Cooking the books, Recipe System
  12. Occupational Health and Safety Register System
  13. Online Safety Net Application System

Other ideas that have not been sorted and determined as valid include:

  1. RFID tracking system
  2. Timetable import and display system

There will be additions and changes to these lists over the next few days.

Other information

Sue and myself require a project charter before any real work is conducted on the project. A good start point for a charter is to create a project proposal for Adrian, have this signed off as a valid project, then use this as the basis of the project charter.

Projects may be completed by individuals or teams of up to three persons. The proposed team should be part of the project proposal and charter. Roles and responsibilities need to be specified clearly in the project charter.

You will need to ensure you have an interview with the client when writing your project proposal/charter.

For example:

Jane Doe is completing the question entry section of the system, Fred Bloggs is completing the user security and registration section, Jack Hill is completing result reporting. Jack and Fred are conducting usability testing.)

It is possible for a student who is completing a smaller number of units to contribute to a larger project by having specific requirements outlined and they completing these tasks as required. For example if the student is completing the “Advanced Scripting” competency, then they may be responsible for creating AJAX based login, logout, dynamic reporting or similar items for the site.

Each team member will track and blog the work they have completed on a daily basis, plus summarise progress and other relevant information on a weekly basis. This includes the team and project selection processes.

Web testing will need to use students from other classes. Please make sure you add time into the project management to ensure usability testing is conducted. You may need to conduct more than one session during the lifetime of the project.

Make sure that the charter for your project (and the proposal) shows how the system you are proposing to implement can affect the client in a positive manner, as well as possible drawbacks.

Important Dates

Selection of projects must be completed by close of business on Monday 3rd November 2008. Selections, proposals and other items must be emailed to Adrian by 5pm on the date above.
